Students Helping Students By: Nora M. '16

During the Winter Trimester, Nora M. ’16 was inspired to launch a new peer tutoring program along with the National Honor Society at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School.  Nora outlined the program herself in the latest edition of the student newspaper:

Recently the National Honors Society at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall started up an exciting initiative titled ‘Students Helping Students,’ or SHS. SHS is a support system where students who feel as though they need some extra help in a challenging class can apply to be matched with their peers who feel more comfortable in the subject area.

Upperclassmen are encouraged to apply as ‘tutors’, although the program is free and does not require any actual lessons to be taught by students. Once their applications are submitted, the NHS members will match students seeking support with tutors.

Here’s some basic information about the initiative:

1. What:
The SHS Program will allow students who feel comfortable in certain subjects to offer academic support to their peers who need a bit more help. Tutors are not responsible for teaching lessons, just supporting their peers.

2. Who:
Students who feel like they need some extra support in different areas are welcome to apply to be matched with a peer tutor. This program seeks to offer students more ways to achieve academic success. Potential tutors can be any upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) who can prove they are strong in their preferred subjects.

3. When:
SHS 'tutoring' sessions can take place whenever the tutor and the student are available. On the applications there are spaces to indicate what time is best for you.

4. Where:
Sessions take place in an area that both the tutor and student agree on. Some suggested areas on campus are in the media center, in a classroom, in the dining hall or during study halls.

The members of the NHS here at CH-CH hope that this program can help strengthen the academics and continue to build friendships between students in different classes.
