Dr. Conrad's Overseas Travels

In October, Head of School Lance Conrad traveled on an 8-day trip to East Asia, attending school fairs, as well as meeting with alumni, current parents and past parents in Seoul, Taipei, Shanghai and Beijing. Dr. Conrad hosted dinner receptions in each of the cities to connect with the extended CH-CH family living on the other side of the world.

“Many of our international families and alumni are not able to visit Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall as often as they might like,” said Dr. Conrad. “We decided to bring a little CH-CH to them!”

Take a look at a few images and stories from Dr. Conrad’s travels.

At the Noryangjin Fish Market in Seoul, South Korea, Head of School Lance Conrad surveys the incredibly diverse collection of fresh seafood. He ultimately chose a Russian King Crab from the North Pacific Ocean that was cooked and consumed on site at a traditional low table with seat cushions on the floor.

In Seoul, Dr. Conrad prepared and presented a CH-CH table for visitors attending a U.S. independent school fair sponsored by The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS). He interviewed and met prospective Korean students and educational consultants, respectively.

Dr. Conrad witnessed the pomp and circumstance of the Changing of the Royal Guard at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the largest of the Five Grand Palaces in Seoul, South Korea. In ancient times, the royal guards of the Joseon Dynasty performed the task of guarding the entrance to the palace where the king ruled the country. Since 1469 the ceremony has taken place and the present reenactment ceremony began in 1996.

One of the highlights of Dr. Conrad’s trip was a visit to the former middle school of David Luo ’18, outside Shanghai, China. Here, Dr. Conrad enjoys a Xiwai International School tour from Dr. Lin Min, principal of this 4,000 student PK-12 private school.
