U.S. Senate Simulation at CH-CH

On October 28, 2016, Chapel Hill - Chauncy Hall students gathered in the CH-CH Commons to conduct the School’s first U.S. Senate simulation. The simulation was created by the history department; they wanted their students to see the inner workings of the country’s legislation process. History teacher Colin Meiselmen, said he wanted “the students to experience what it is like to be a legislator and to make changes to our country.”

Each student portrayed a republican or democrat who currently serves in the U.S. Senate. The students researched their senator to understand their positions regarding various topics, as well as to learn their voting history and relationship with their constituents. The students were then divided into sub-committee based upon their senator’s memberships. These sub-committees met during class time in the days leading up the simulation. Each student was required to propose a bill to their sub-committee and then attempt to have that bill pass in the senate during the full simulation. The students spent the simulation day voting on various bills that ranged from taxes on clean energy, to dispensing aid to refugees in Jordan. The simulation dealt with current issues while providing students new perspectives of the legislative process.
