 | Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School has a limited amount of financial aid available each year. CH-CH uses the services of the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) in Princeton, New Jersey to calculate a family’s need for financial aid. The Financial Aid Committee calculates awards for new and returning students by mid-March each year. After that time, families who would like to be considered for financial aid will be placed on a waiting list for financial aid.
To apply for financial aid, please fill out the Parent Financial Statement (PFS) on the SSS website (sss.nais.org). In addition to the PFS, families will also need to submit 2008 & 2009 (once available) tax returns to SSS. All of these forms need to be received by SSS before February 1st in order to be considered for Financial Aid.

| Q. | What is need-based financial aid?
| | A. | The financial aid program at Chapel Hill - Chauncy Hall School is strictly need based. This means that financial aid awards are based upon the families’ demonstrated need. While the admission application process and the financial aid application process occur almost simultaneously, the Chapel Hill – Chauncy Hall Admission Committee does not consider need when reviewing a candidate’s appropriateness for admission. |
 | Q. | Are there merit-based scholarships? | | A. | No. Financial aid is awarded solely on the basis of demonstrated need. However, because the number of financial aid applicants exceeds the amount of aid available, not all students who demonstrate need will receive an award. |
 | Q. | How is our family’s contribution calculated? | | A. | CH-CH uses SSS, a financial aid service provided by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) to assist with creating an appropriate financial aid package for our families. The SSS report combined with tax documents and information we gather in our financial aid office all help determine a family’s award. The Financial Aid Committee evaluates each family’s situation individually and at times the amount of an award may differ from that stated on the SSS report. While some families will qualify for a substantial amount of aid, our policy is that a family must contribute a minimum of $5,000 towards their child’s tuition regardless of the amount they qualify for. |
 | Q. | Do you offer financial aid to international families? | | A. | In rare cases financial aid may be available to an international family. If you are an international student and believe your family may qualify, please contact the Financial Aid Committee to discuss what options may be available to you. |
 | Q. | When will we be notified of our financial aid award? | | A. | Financial aid awards are included in a student’s acceptance package. Families must notify the Admission Committee of their acceptance of a financial aid package by April 9th by returning a signed contract and deposit. |
 | Q. | What if I have trouble filling out the SSS online? | | A. | If you are having technical difficulties with the SSS, please contact their support team directly. If you have questions regarding CH-CH policies, please do not hesitate to contact the financial aid office. |
 | Q. | Will I have to pay back financial aid awards? | | A. | No. At Chapel Hill - Chauncy Hall School, financial aid awards come in the form of grants. Grants are need-based awards that do not need to be repaid. |
 | Q. | Do I need to reapply for financial aid each year? | | A. | Yes. Each year, returning families will need to resubmit an SSS as well as the current year’s tax documents. The Financial Aid Committee will reevaluate the each family’s financial situation and make an award appropriate for that family. All returning families must be in good standing both academically and financially before they are granted an award for the next school year. |
 | Q. | What is your policy regarding parents who live in separate households? | | A. | The Financial Aid Committee requires both households to submit a PFS and tax documents. If one parent is uninvolved in the child’s life and has been for some time, the family must provide us with a statement to this effect from a lawyer, school official, clergy member, or other third party who is aware of the situation in a professional capacity. |
 | Q. | What is your confidentiality policy? | | A. | All information received by the Financial Aid Committee is kept confidential within the financial aid office. Members of the Financial Aid Committee are the only members of the community privy to this information and it is never discussed outside of this group of individuals. Financial aid documents are stored in compliance with state and federal guidelines. |
