Technology @ CH-CH

We view technology as a tool that supports the overall educational program. Our technology department supports the computer infrastructure needed to help students and faculty to create word processed documents, spreadsheets, multimedia presentations, as well as perform research on the Internet.  Our campus features an internal fiber optic network and two T1 lines for voice and data.

There are over sixty computers and 10 networked printers located throughout the campus for student use. Each faculty member has a laptop, and this fall Chapel Hill – Chauncy Hall is rolling out a pilot WiFi program that will enable students and faculty to wirelessly access the internet.

Why so much technology?

The latest technology can engage students in ways that were not previously possible:

• In History classes, faculty can effortlessly display detailed maps or powerful photographs to the entire class in a Power Point presentation.

• Math teachers use a SmartBoard to solve equations and draw perfect geometric shapes.

• Students in the digital video class are able to film, edit, and play their own DVD to the entire school using the latest software.

• All students have their own personal CH-CH e-mail account to communicate with faculty and other students.

Digital Arts Lab
The equipment in the modern digital arts lab includes 8 high end graphics workstations with large wide-screen monitors, an LCD projector, color laser printer and large format poster printer. Computers have commercial level software including Adobe’s InDesign, Premiere, and Photoshop. Located in the building for the arts, the digital arts lab is used primarily for graphics design and digital film courses.

Media Center
The media center has 15 computers with flat screen monitors equipped with the latest software. There is a scanner, LCD projector, laser printer, Internet access, photo enhancing programs, and more. The media center is the perfect environment for computer programming classes and for students to work on advanced multi-media projects. It’s also a great place to send e-mail to friends and family.

What about after school hours?
Convenient work stations exist in each of the Dormitory Work Areas. The stations facilitate access to computers and printers in the evening and on weekends.

What about good, old fashioned books?
The NEWLY RENOVATED Morgan Library is centrally located on the CH-CH campus. It provides academic support for students and faculty, as well as recreational reading material for the community. The collection consists of approximately 11,500 volumes, and 60 magazines covering a wide variety of topics and interests. The video collection contains more than 400 titles in subject areas including Art, History, Literature, Science, and Foreign Languages. In addition, a computer porch offers five computers with Internet access. The Library has a subscription to an educational online periodicals database that gives students and faculty access to articles in over 475 periodicals and magazines, most with full text online. This summer the library received a total makeover, including new bookshelves, new carpet and paint, and new furniture.

Discount Purchasing Resources
DELL Student Laptop Program

We are encouraging students to buy a laptop through a deal with Dell Computers.  This is an optional program.

Purchasing a laptop through this program will allow the CH-CH Technology Department to assist with setting up access to our new WiFi system.  Other than setting up access, the technology department will not be supporting the computers.

After the delivery of the laptop, Dell provides direct next day support. We have configured two different options available to students. One is a 10" laptop and another is a 13" laptop packed with lots of power. Other options are available, but are not directly supported by the school. We encourage you to go to this website for more information and to make a purchase: www.dell.com/epp/chch
