Daniel Mertsch Department Chair

Originally from Essen, Germany, Daniel Mertsch is a veteran of teaching at CH-CH. A father of two whom loves sports and playing with his dog Roscoe, Daniel is the Director of the Skills and Academic Support Department at CH-CH.

What brought you to CH-CH?
I wasn’t really happy with public school programming in the U.S. since there was too strict a structure and no room for creative freedom in my teaching. At CH-CH, I felt I had a lot more creative license and more time to work with students.
What are your best qualities as a teacher?
When I am at my best, I can listen, be patient, and ask a lot of questions until the student and I have figured out how best to improve and achieve success in the classroom.

What will students learn in the SAS classroom?
They will learn about themselves. They will find out how to navigate the gray areas of managing workloads, being successful in school and comprehending the materials. Most importantly, they will learn how to find solutions for success.

What is the overall goal of the SAS program?
As contradictory as it sounds, our goal is to make ourselves unnecessary, and as quickly as possible! We go from a hands-on approach with our students in their freshman year to hands-off by their senior year so that SAS turns into more of a safety net rather than a prop for our students.

Name one word you would use to describe CH-CH?
