Hillery (Smith) Shay, ‘91

Minneapolis is a long way from Melrose, MA, but for Hillery (Smith) Shay ‘91, the road to her adopted hometown ran right through Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School. Using a Canon AE-1 borrowed from her mother, Hillery pursued her love of photography at CH-CH and, later, at Haverford College.
“Alice Solorow is the most inspirational person I have ever met,” said Hillery, describing how CH-CH’s veteran photography teacher helped her hone her craft. “She instructed me in balance, design, and creativity and helped me reflect contemporary politics, culture, and science through my work.” After graduating with a fine arts degree from Haverford College, Hillery joined the Baltimore Sun as a photographer, using her skills to document the news. After stops at the Fort Worth Star and the Miami Telegram, Hillery opted to pursue an MBA to study brand strategy and marketing. Today, she is the senior manager for global creative services for St. Jude’s Medical, Inc., a global medical technology leader, where she focuses on the company’s visual identity and branding. Commenting on her CH-CH experience, Hillery said, “CH-CH gave me this tight knit community, the freedom to experiment, and ability to see my own potential.”
