As students arrived at Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall this September, there was excitement around the major renovation to Worcester Hall, the boys’ dormitory. The project was completed over the summer of 2016, and at the ribbon cutting on Thursday, September 22nd, the excitement was palpable.

“This a very important day,” said Board of Trustees Chair B.J. Rudman. “It’s about the students, and this renovation marks a milestone for Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall.”

Originally built in the early 1960’s, Worcester Hall has been a home away from home for hundreds of students over the years. During the past summer, Worcester Hall received a $1 million renovation that brought new life to the common living space while highlighting the natural surroundings, particularly Mill Pond.

“It looks like a completely new dorm,” said Worcester Hall resident Kyle Gomes ‘17. “And the new deck by the pond does a great job of getting people together outside.”

The renovation re-imagined and expanded the first-floor community space with floor-to-ceiling windows as well as an elevated deck extending to the water. A new second-floor lounge was built in the center of the dorm and intensely large windows were added to the stairwells overlooking the pond. The creation of a large outdoor green space with new landscaping also provides significant aesthetic improvements.

“We are excited to bring the natural light and views of the pond through the building,” said Head of School Lance Conrad. “This, along with the added community space, will make it a much more welcoming home for both our boarding students and dorm families.”
