Introducing Mary Nemeth

Mary Nemeth is our new music teacher this year, and comes to us across the country from sunny California.  Originally from Cleveland, OH, Mary earned her B.A. in Music at Oberlin College, and her M.A. in Education, Curriculum and Instruction at California State University.

What classes are you teaching?
I’m currently teaching Vocal Ensemble, which is open to all CH-CH singers; Chamber Ensemble, which is for intermediate level students; Keyboarding, which is an exciting new class this year that will focus on songs in a wide variety of genres; and Introduction to Musical Theatre.

What will students in the Introduction to Musical Theater class be working on?
We are going to cover a lot of amazing areas, including: reading about the history of musicals, taking an in depth look at individual musicals from the mid-1800s through today, learning songs from each musical, reading from scripts and performing onstage, designing costumes for characters in musicals, designing and applying stage makeup, writing and performing their own monologue, performing a mock dance audition, and performing a solo from a Broadway musical.

What brought you to CH-CH?
I like the high school age-group and really love how CH-CH approaches Multiple Intelligences in its curriculum.  I was turned on to the M.I. approach in college and it was amazing to find a school that actually practices it!

What is your most important role at CH-CH?
I am an ambassador to music, and that is the most important job.  If I can make the relationship my students have with music a positive one, I may be able to influence them into exploring more musical arenas that they may not have otherwise.

What do you do outside of school for fun?
I garden, I love ceramics, cooking and dog friendly activities (to explore with golden retriever, Maggie).  My signature dish is butternut squash soup with wild rice, sausage and corn.

What makes you vital to the CH-CH community aside from your obvious musical and cooking talents?
I believe my love of jazz hands, box steps, and all things musical theatre make me a vital member of the CH-CH community.

Name one word you would use to describe CH-CH if you were telling someone outside of the community about it.
Inclusive.
