In 2014, Nora Maybury ‘16 successfully brought Relay for Life (benefiting the American Cancer Society) to Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall and established it as a new tradition for the School. In addition to this accomplishment, she was a member of the National Honor Society, a Cavalry Tour Guide, and served as student body president her senior year. We sat down to speak with Nora about Relay for Life and her time at CH-CH.
When did you become involved in Relay for Life? I first participated in Relay for Life when I was eight years old. My dad was fighting melanoma at the time, and the event was a good way to spend time with family and bring the community together. When I arrived at CH-CH, I was passionate about starting a team here.
Where did your spirit for charity come from? I feel as though I have always had the spirit, but it was at CH-CH where I was able to act on it, especially with all of the help I received. Here I was given an endless amount of support from the faculty and students, and it allowed me to turn my love of charity work into something real.
How was your CH-CH experience? CH-CH was a bit of a challenge for me when I first arrived. Over time, the School helped me become more confident, which allowed me to focus on my academics and take more Honors and AP courses. I loved the small class sizes at CH-CH because I never had to worry about not being heard in the classroom.
What have you taken away from your secondary school years? I am grateful I had the opportunity to come to CH-CH. It is unique in that I was encouraged to do things I didn’t know I could do, such as organizing a Relay for Life event here.
Nora began her first semester at Lewis & Clark College this fall.
