Let's Go Chargers!
The best part about sports at CH-CH is that they’re open to both seasoned and new athletes. We’re willing to teach the sport and make sure an athlete has the opportunity to be a member of whatever team they chose. This is a school where everyone is the member of a team.
We offer a wide selection of competitive team sports as well as non-competitive sports and activities. Our JV level programs focus on participation, skill development and the opportunity to gain new experiences. The varsity level programs will focus more on skill development, competition, and the pursuit of excellence.
Because our athletics and activities program is so vital to the CH-CH experience, families often have specific questions about league affiliation, student participation, and other aspects of the program. Please contact our Athletic Director, Lori White at 781-314-0850 or lwhite@chch.org with any programmatic questions.
Last weekend, Olivia M. ('24) joined 102 wrestlers from 30 different schools to participate in the 9th Annual Phillips Academy Girls Wrestling tournament. The tournament featured a clinic from 7x National Team Member, 2x College National Champion, World University Champion, and 2x Olympic team alternate, Katherine Shai as well as a full day tournament with 14 blocked weights, 11 of which were 8-person brackets, and 3 of which were round robin brackets of 5. Liv participated in an 8-person bracket and finished the day in 4th place.
"As the only girl on my team, it was really fun to wrestle and experience an event with so many females in the sport of wrestling. I learned a lot and really enjoyed it." - Olivia M. ('24)
Congratulations to Layla Maniscalco (‘23) on being named the IGC Volleyball Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year. As a returning captain, Maniscalco continued to display her excellence in all technical facets of the game. As an outside hitter, she has the ability to deliver strong plays from anywhere on the court and can attack equally effectively from the front or back row. She excels in digging, passing, and serving. She is able to read opponents and make necessary adjustments to her play and her anticipation and quickness allow her to keep plays alive.
Maniscalco’s 2022 stats were remarkable. She had a.49% hitting percentage, ace percentage of 52.97%, a service receive rate of 89.62%, and a nearly flawless digging percentage of 92.92%. Maniscalco is a true complete player and her game composure set the tone for the season. During one conference game, with the Chargers trailing 15-17, Maniscalco turned the tide with a resounding cross court kill, then proceeded to serve\win the next 9 points via her serve including 7 aces to close out a 25-17 victor for the Chargers.
“She brings tremendous intangibles to each game and practice; confidence that is contagious to her teammates, positive and calm energy with a “one point at a time” mentality. Layla recognizes the importance of mistakes and uses them as motivation for herself and her teammates to learn and grow from.” - Coach Emma Maniscalco (‘19)
Congratulations to the Girls Volleyball team on winning the 2022 Independent Girls Conference Championship! The Chargers entered this season ready to go and combined a group of solid returning players with talented newcomers to take the IGC by storm. Coach Maniscalco reflects that she “knew from the start of the season that this group of girls was going to be successful from their drive to be successful, their willingness to try new things, and their connection to build each other up.”
The team went 16-0 in league with an overall regular season record of 17-2. As the number one seed in the IGC Tournament, the Chargers received a bye in the first round and went on to defeat Gann Academy 3-0 in the semi-finals and Covenant Christian Academy 3-0 in the championship game.
The Chargers are awaiting news of a bid to the NEPSAC tournament where they are currently ranked second in Class D.
Coach Ian MacPhail has been named the 2022 Coach of the Year by USA Lacrosse, and it’s easy to see why. His enthusiasm and passion for the sport of lacrosse and teaching athletes is evident the moment you meet him. This enthusiasm and passion helped lead the Chargers to win the 2022 Massachusetts Bay Independent League Boys Lacrosse Championship. Coach MacPhail’s ability to motivate athletes, allowing them to see their full potential both on and off the field, has created a team in the truest sense. His practices are fun, yet challenging, and a place where athletes are excited to be.
In addition to coaching lacrosse, he has previously assisted the varsity boys’ soccer team, varsity girls’ basketball team and the JV volleyball team at CH-CH. Coach MacPhail has previously coached at The Winchendon School, Arlington High School, and Concord Academy. He played four years of varsity lacrosse at Guilford College. Coach MacPhail also led the Chargers to the first Boys Lacrosse Massachusetts Bay Independent League Championship in school history in 2018. In addition to coaching at CH-CH, he coaches the Penguins Lacrosse Team and PrimeTime Elite Lacrosse Camps.
Congratulations to Jaylin Johnson (‘25) on being named the 2022 Boys Lacrosse MVP of the Massachusetts Bay Independent League! In his first season as a Charger, Johnson led the team in goals, was second in assists, and posted a 24/7/31 point line for the season in only 9 games. He was often closely guarded by the other team, and he created offense for others by clearing space, securing possessions with 26 ground balls in league games, and often drawing double teams which created opportunities for the Chargers to score. One of Johnson’s many contributions to the team was his vocal leadership on and off the field, where his passion and drive helped push both himself and his teammates to reach their full potential throughout the season.
“Seeing Jaylin step into a huge role immediately and grow into a leader as well as a skilled player has been a joy as a coach. I’m proud of him and so excited to help him reach new heights next year.” - Coach MacPhail
On May 13, the Boys Lacrosse team won the Massachusetts Bay Independent League Championship for the first outright lacrosse title in school history following their 2018 co-champion finish! The team traveled to Beverly where the Waring School battled back from a 4-1 halftime deficit to force overtime. Jaylin J. (‘25) sealed the victory with his third goal of the afternoon on a curl from around the net to win the game 7-6. David L. (‘22) and Andrew B. (‘23) each contributed two goals for the day with Gabe F. (‘24) adding an assist. Antoine I. (‘24) tallied 12 saves from the cage.
The Chargers finished 7-2 overall on the season and 5-1 in the league. Coach MacPhail “could not be more proud of this group of guys. With new players providing key contributions at each position, this team grew so much this year and deserves every bit of their success.”
