English Language Learner Program

The English Language Learner Workshops help students to develop the English language skills they need to be successful in school and in their personal lives. International students are enrolled entirely in integrated classes with native-English speakers, but some can use additional guidance. When they arrive on campus, international students take a language assessment that guides the school in determining what level of support they need. Many new international students will participate in an ELL Workshop, a small class taught by a trained ESL instructor, where they practice active reading, research techniques, written expression, vocabulary building, and class discussion strategies. This workshop provides an environment that maximizes learning by emphasizing process, communication, and constructive risk-taking; students also receive support time management, planning, and prioritizing as they adapt to the culture of CH-CH.
  • ELL Workshop

The ELL Workshop focuses on providing academic skill support to students for whom English is not their native language. The students are integrated in their classes with native-English speakers, but could use additional guidance and practice with active reading, research techniques, written expression, vocabulary building, and discussion skills. The Workshop can also help students with time management, goal-setting, and planning that can lead to academic success in their core classes. The Workshop will reinforce good learning habits that can help develop language and culture skills as well as provide the necessary experience to build fluency. The students will become practitioners of self-advocacy as they seek understanding with the help of the whole community.
  • ELL History

ELL History is a course for students who are still developing English language skills. This course focuses on academic writing and reading comprehension in order to prepare students to enter World Civilization II or U.S. History. Students use primary and secondary sources to study major themes in history such as democracy and dictatorship, imperialism, and revolution. The course also serves as an introduction to academic life in the U.S. and supports students through the research paper writing process.
  • ELL English

ELL English is a course for students who are still developing English language skills. This course aims to help students achieve grade-level English proficiency in reading fluency and comprehension. Students read and write a variety of genres, mirroring the work their peers are doing in The Discovery of Self and Critical Reading and Writing. The course also serves as an introduction to academic life in the U.S. and utilizes games and other interactive activities to increase students' comfort with the English language.
