The CH-CH Approach to Middle School

At CH-CH, we know that every learner enters the classroom with a unique set of intellectual, personal, and academic strengths. In order to ensure achievement of essential skills and understandings, CH-CH teachers come to know their students well and provide them with a variety of entry points and academic strategies that allow them to leverage their individual strengths in the classroom. Middle School students are provided with both challenge and support as they come to understand how they learn best.
"Since coming to CH-CH Middle School, our son is such a happier and more confident person. We’ve seen lots of growth in self-esteem, building student skills, and a more positive appearance. It’s been a transformative experience."

Challenge and Support

One of CH-CH’s signature programs is Skills and Academic Stragtegies, otherwise known as SAS. In Middle School, this program is integrated into nearly everything students do. They receive executive function coaching, personalized learning strategies, and scaffolding that allows for academic growth. When a student requires more support, they have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a SAS teacher. When students are ready for more challenge, they work with a teacher or advisor to identify a project or area of a class where they can dig deeper.

The Middle School takes a holistic approach to teaching and learning with overlap among content areas. The dedicated Middle School teachers work closely together, in conjunction with the Head of Middle School to provide a dynamic and supportive academic program. The Middle School follows a schedule designed to meet the needs of Middle School learners.

Competency Based Learning: Insight for Student Success and Growth

Our Competency Based Learning (CBL) approach in grades 7–9 creates authentic learning experiences that align with how students learn best, allowing each individual to leverage their unique strengths and discover opportunities for growth. Students receive meaningful, evidence-based feedback on specific competencies, giving both families and students greater transparency and insight into learning progress.

This personalized approach fosters student agency and purpose-driven learning, empowering young people to become active participants in their educational journey. Students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and transferable skills essential for success. By meeting students where they are and providing multiple pathways to demonstrate mastery, CBL helps each learner build confidence and discover their passions. Students develop the self-direction and ownership that will serve them well throughout their time at CH-CH, their transition to college, and beyond.

Community Connection

Middle and Upper School students join together in several areas of community life, including Assemblies, Winter Carnival, and Community Service activities (both during the academic week and on weekends). CH-CH has a robust co-curricular program with a wide range of opportunities, and all students participate in an afternoon sport or activity each season. Middle School students may play sports on an Upper School team, open to both new and seasoned athletes, audition for a theatre production where no one is cut from the cast or crew, or join other activity offerings.

Students regularly engage in experiential learning through field trips around the Boston area that connect classroom concepts to real-world experiences. These educational excursions include visits to Cradles to Crayons to learn about community service and social impact, Newton Community Farm to explore sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship, the JFK Library to deepen understanding of history and civic engagement, and the New England Aquarium to study marine biology and conservation efforts.

Campus as Classroom

CH-CH's campus spans 42 acres, providing Middle School students with an expansive and diverse learning environment that extends far beyond traditional classroom walls. You'll often see teachers taking their classes outside, whether they're using the pond in the center of campus for a lab in biology or finding a quiet spot in the shade to discuss literature. With all of this serene green space, we often forget that Boston is only ten miles away, offering additional opportunities for cultural and educational experiences.

The Middle School home is in the Learning Commons, the space which originally housed the Chapel Hill School when it began back in the late 19th century. This dedicated space houses four classrooms and the large, flexible Learning Commons where Middle School students and faculty have room for activities ranging from group projects to presentations to quiet study time.

When projects call for artwork, theatrical presentations, or musical performances, Middle School students utilize the Art Studios and Mankiw Theatre in the state-of-the-art Visual & Performing Arts Center. This combination of a homelike Middle School environment with access to Upper School resources creates an ideal setting where students can concentrate, learn, and grow.
