Patience Marks, ‘11

Since her graduation from CH-CH, former Student Government President Patience Marks, ’11 has not forgotten her time at CH-CH.  During her freshman year at Boston College, Patience wrote to her CH-CH biology teacher Gwen Shipley to thank her for preparing her for the challenges of higher education.  “I was well organized and knew how to plan my study time.  I even helped some other students with time management and class preparation!”
During her time at BC, Patience has continue in her winning ways. As a member of Boston College’s class of 2015, Patience was recently named the winner of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship.  The scholarship recognizes a Boston College junior who has demonstrated superior academic achievement, extracurricular leadership, community service, and involvement with African-American issues and the African-American community both on and off campus.  Prompted by what she sees as the inequities and injustices in the healthcare system, Patience’s goal is to “change the face of healthcare.”

After she earns her bachelor of science degree from the Connell School of Nursing, Patience plans to continue her education with a graduate degree in nursing.  In addition to practicing as a nurse, she hopes to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide an environment of accessible and enhanced patient treatment regardless of economic, racial, or social background.

From her childhood in Liberia through her CH-CH career and beyond, Patience Marks has truly left her mark on those around her, and seized opportunities that presented themselves.  Her motivation? As Patience said in accepting the MLK Scholarship, “I know that all things are possible with faith, determination, and perseverance.”

Patience is still connected to CH-CH as she visits campus often.
