Middle School

Welcome to CH-CH Middle School!

Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall’s new Middle School. CH-CH is a special place and we are excited to offer our amazing program to younger students who will benefit from our thoughtful approach to teaching and learning. For years, we have heard from CH-CH families that they wished the School included a Middle School experience.

Our inaugural group of students, the Class of 2028, is off to a great start this fall and just a year from now, we will expand our program to include our first class of 7th grade students, the Class of 2030! Below, you can find more information about our program, community, and the application process, and if you have any questions, please complete the inquiry form or reach out to me.

CH-CH Middle School Digital Version

Why CH-CH Middle School?

At CH-CH, we know that every learner enters the classroom with a unique set of intellectual, personal, and academic strengths. In order to ensure achievement of essential skills and understandings, CH-CH teachers come to know their students well and provide them with a variety of entry points and academic strategies that allow them to leverage their individual strengths in the classroom. Middle School students will be provided with both challenge and support as they come to understand how they learn best.

The Middle School will follow a schedule (see below) designed to meet the needs of Middle School learners. Students will have four 60 minute classes each day with breaks for recess, snacks/lunch, study skills, advisory, and more. The Middle School program will also include art, physical education, and health classes each week. The Middle School Academic day concludes at 3pm, when students move to co-curriculars with the option to participate in a Middle School activity or join an Upper School sport or activity.

The Middle School will take a holistic approach to teaching and learning with overlap among content areas addressing a central theme for the year. This will provide students with the opportunity to explore their work through a variety of lenses, including Anti-Racism & Equity Initiatives, and Community Service.

Campus and Spaces

The Middle School home will be in the Learning Commons, the space which originally housed the Chapel Hill School when it began back in the late 19th century. Following a recent renovation, the space houses four classrooms and the large, flexible Learning Commons. Middle School students and faculty will have dedicated space for the many endeavors they will engage in, from group projects to presentations to quiet study time.

Middle School students and faculty will also have access to many other wonderful teaching & learning spaces on CH-CH’s 42-acre campus, both indoors and outdoors. Science classes will take advantage of the School’s MakerSpace, the Gostylo Greenhouse, and other outdoor spaces. When a project calls for artwork, a theatrical presentation, or musical performance, Middle School students will make use of the Art Studios and Mankiw Theatre in the new state-of-the-art Visual & Performing Arts Center.

Community and Opportunities

Middle and Upper School students will join together in several areas of community life, including Assemblies, Winter Carnival, and Community Service activities (both during the academic week and on weekends). CH-CH has a robust co-curricular program with a wide range of opportunities and all students participate in an afternoon sport or activity each season. Middle School students may play sports on an Upper School team, open to both new and seasoned athletes, audition for the Winter Musical where no one is cut from the cast or crew, or join other activity offerings. There will also be activities reserved exclusively for Middle School students.
