Drama Program Launches Production of the Winter Musical
Jeff Martin
The Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall drama program launched its second production of the year this week, holding auditions for the winter musical SENIORITIS. A musical comedy about that “outrageous, contagious high school student disease,” SENIORITIS follows the lives of a few high school seniors who are facing the challenges of college, the “real world,” and some serious apathy. A bitter, angry assistant principal is stopping at nothing to thwart their successes, all because he was not accepted into one of the famed “Holly League” universities. However, the students catch on to his plan and take pretty extreme measures to uncover his deceitful plot. Of course, they could not do this without the help of celebrity philanthropist Madonjelina. Hilarity ensues, and ultimately, the students reign victorious. [Click For More]
SENIORITIS was written & composed by high school students who are members of the national theater organization THE CAPPIES (www.cappies.com). Outside of the original workshop production, Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School will be the first high school in the nation to produce the musical. “We are excited about this unique and challenging opportunity,” said Musical Director Jeff Martin. “With a brand new musical, we have an unusual amount of creative freedom to design, stage, and perform this show in a way that is suited solely for us. There is no history or precedent looming over us; in fact, we could be setting some precedents.”
Being the first Musical Director to perform the show, Jeff Martin has been signed on by the CAPPIES to serve as an orchestrator and score editor. “Undoubtedly, we will find glitches in the score. As we come across those things, I will be keeping very detailed, organized notes, so that the score can be tweaked for future productions.”
Together with Christina Kappel, Stage Director and Choreographer, Mr. Martin is looking to present one of the best musicals in CH-CH history. They commented, “We had a number of really difficult decisions to make in casting this show. However, we feel like we have assembled a great cast, and we are looking forward to a wonderful production.” Performances of SENIORITIS will be on February 20 & 21, 2008 at 7 pm in the Barn Theater.
