Health and Wellness Courses

Health & Wellness Curriculum

At CH-CH, we are committed to providing responsive and intentional counseling support to our students. We also believe it is imperative for us to complement those efforts with proactive Wellness education. Our ever-evolving Wellness programming encompasses multi-week Wellness courses delivered by grade-level, guest speakers, and outside experts - all delivered with the intent to engage students in conversation on the issues that are central to their social, emotional, and academic development. Though courses are required for all grades, we work hard to provide an element of choice in specialized content areas as our students near graduation.

Course Overview

CH-CH students participate in six to seven-week Health and Wellness sessions delivered by the counseling team with regular guest speakers from both within and outside the immediate CH-CH community. The lessons are delivered one afternoon each week for forty-minute blocks, with each grade participating for one quarter of the academic year. The Wellness curriculum for 8th and 9th grade focuses primarily on digital citizenship and social skills utilizing the Social Institute Program. Importantly, Parents/guardians have access to the Social Institute platform, where they can see which lessons are being taught to their students and access a host of complimentary resources. Additionally, 8th grade students have a regular Health class in their wellness rotation, taught primarily by the School Nurse and Athletic Trainer.

Wellness content in 10th grade focuses on identity and belonging, guiding students through meaningful reflection, hearing stories from others, and continuing their intentional journey of developing both self- and community awareness. To recognize the developmental shifts of an older, more mature adolescent, 11th and 12th grade Wellness uses an elective model in which students can choose from several two to three-week electives they are most interested in. Some of these electives include navigating current events, substance use and addiction, stress and emotional resilience, communication and conflict resolution, mindful movement, wellness through art, physical activity and sleep hygiene, healthy relationships, and financial literacy.

CH-CH strives to provide comprehensive sexual health education to all students. For the past three years, CH-CH has brought in outside expert educators through the organization EducaHealth to teach a five-lesson series. CH-CH students receive sexual health education in 9th grade and then again in 11th grade, meaning that each student, depending on when they started, receives at least one sexual health education session, with most students experiencing two sessions during their time at CH-CH. The 11th grade sexual health content goes beyond the basics and addresses issues that more closely align with what an older adolescent encounters. The EducaHealth educator who conducts these lessons also hosts a webinar for parents/guardians about the instructor, the organization, and the content being taught. This webinar is recorded and put out to parents in case they were unable to attend live virtually. Additionally, CH-CH offers an opt-in queer sexual health unit. This program was specifically requested by students and is offered several times throughout the year, often during clubs block to make it more accessible for students.
