Varsity Softball Wins League Co-Championship

Congratulations to the girls’ softball team on winning the Independent Girls’ Conference Co-Championship on Thursday. They share the title with Gann Academy with both teams finishing the season with a league record of 6-2. This is the first IGC Championship in either school’s history and is quite an accomplishment.

The softball season was a nail-biter with 3 of our league wins being decided by only 1 run. Our first game at Gann was a loss decided by 1 run in the bottom of the 7th inning. The team was led by the pitcher and catcher senior duo of Jacquelyn I. ‘15 and Emily A. ’15. The team’s consistent ability to get solid hits and additional stolen bases earned them 153 runs on their 11 game season.

The Chargers entered Wednesday’s game vs. Landmark with a slight lead for first place in the league standings. A win would secure them a minimum of a shared league title. The team put together a 17-4 win that ended in the 5th inning. Juliette D. ‘16 displayed a rocket of an arm with her fielding at shortstop. Savannah W. ‘17 caught everything coming her way at 1st base including multiple outs from right fielder, Mami H. ‘16 Second baseman Genesis C. ‘17 had a scoop and toss from the glove for an out at 1st.

Heading into Thursday’s game, Gann’s chance for a piece of the title was on the line with the Chargers already securing the shared title. The teams battled back and forth with multiple lead changes throughout the game. In the top of the 7th, Gann put together a string of hits, taking a lead that the Chargers were not able to overcome. It was a bittersweet end to an amazing season.

Congratulations to the team for winning their first league title. GO CHARGERS!
